Blurb: Elysandra Winters has always yearned for a life of adventure on the rolling seas and is willing to do whatever it takes to fulfill her dream. When her Privateer father continually refuses to allow his only daughter to sail, Ellie defies him, disguises herself as a boy, and goes in search of a captain who will give her a chance to prove her worth.

Thanks to the cursed selkie blood coursing through his veins, Daniel O’Rourke needs the sea to survive. After giving up on his humanity and spending three years in seal form, he decides to give his human side another chance. Daniel goes in search of a job and a sense of normalcy, earning himself a position aboard Captain Winter’s ship, The Siren’s Call. However, his new captain’s first assignment has nothing at all to do with sailing, and everything to do with his headstrong young daughter.

Years later, when the leader of a band of bloodthirsty pirates murders Captain Winters, Daniel and Elysandra’s lives come crashing back together with the force of a hurricane. Both experts in deception, they must find a way to trust each other in order to quell the raging storm between them or have any hope of hunting down the captain’s killer.

To celebrate the “re-release”, I thought I would share a little teaser from the new ending with you all. Get you in the mood for more Ellie and her sweet hunk of a hero, Daniel.

Excerpt:

A frazzled and exhausted Daniel paced the deck and cast anxious glances at the companionway with each pass. When he’d returned to the cabin with Amelia, his mother-in-law ushered him from the room and told to go make himself useful elsewhere. Easier said than accomplished.

He spent the first two hours at the helm trying not to think about what was happening to his wife below. Another hour worrying over the possibility his child would be born cursed, like him, and how Ellie might handle learning her child wasn’t human. When the stress of his wandering thoughts became overwhelming, Daniel spent a few hours in the company of his men, a deck of cards, and a keg of rum. By hour thirteen, no amount of rum could drown out the moans of agony echoing up to him from the captain’s quarters. With each muffled groan that filters up to assault his ears, tiny needles of guilt stabbed him in the chest. If it weren’t for his weakness when she’d shown up on his doorstep dripping wet and vulnerable, she wouldn’t be in pain. She’d be safe, smiling, not screaming in agony.

How much longer could it be? Ellie might be the strongest woman he’d ever known, but even she had limits. Surely, she couldn’t take much more. He knew he couldn’t. Daniel performed a quick about face and stalked back toward the ship’s stern. As he reached the mainmast, a strangled, weak cry reached his ears. His steps halted. He tilted his head and listened.

The cries continued, grew louder, more insistent.

The babe!

He sprang into action, darting for the companionway, his feet barely touching the wide plank decking. Rounding the corner, he leapt down the stairway and traversed the length of the lower hall in three long strides. His pace didn’t slow as he crashed through the door to the cabin he shared with Ellie, and skidded to a stop in the center of the room.

His pale but smiling wife lay in the bed, knees up, a sheet covering her lower half. Exhaustion painted her features, but her sea blue eyes danced with joy.

New Release News: The Angel Killer by Lisa Voisin @InkspellPublish #NewRelease

TheAngelKiller.v6BNTHE ANGEL KILLER
by Lisa Voisin

Publisher: Inkspell Publishing
Release Date: January 5, 2015

Blurb: Now that she’s found him again, all Mia Crawford wants is some downtime with her fallen angel boyfriend, Michael. But the call of duty keeps him away—from school and from her—with more demons to smite than ever.

When Michael is mortally wounded by a cursed sword, Mia must perform an ancient blood ritual to save him. But the spell exacts a price. Haunted by visions of war, torture, and despair, Mia discovers the world is in more danger than she ever imagined. Behind the scenes, an evil adversary pulls all the strings.

After redemption, there’s Hell to pay.

EXCERPT:

Light from the near-full moon shimmers off the leaves of sycamore trees, and the scent of pomegranate hangs in the air. Though my footfalls are silent on the hard-packed earth, Hell is never far away. Nor is that blood-stained rack that was my prison for millennia. The memory of my master’s claws still stings my throat; the poison of his hate burns below the skin. Perhaps it always will. The only reality I’ve come to know is that my pain satisfies him.

Anka sleeps on a grass mat, her lithe, young form curled into a fetal position on the roof of her family’s mud brick house. Strands of her long, black hair are stuck to her cheekbones from the heat. The girl is old enough to be married but will be taken to the temple of Seth in the morning instead. Rumors of her prophetic dreams have secured her place as an oracle. Such a gift interests my master too, and as influential as Seth is among the Egyptian people, he’s a false god, my master’s rival. A demon warlord just like him.

Her father snores deeply, but the stifling air makes her mother fitful. The woman twists and turns. Does she anticipate me? I stand over the girl and contemplate how to take her without waking them. Their terror alone would sound a call to all the scavengers along the Nile, and my master wants her soul intact. More power that way. In servitude or sacrifice, souls are the fuel that builds empires.

My hand hovers over her nose and mouth, and her soft breath tickles my skin. I could suffocate her while she dreams, a silent, seemingly natural death. Or I could carve out her heart, a symbolic gesture. He’d take pleasure in that. If I’m fast enough, she won’t have time to cry out or wake the others. I run my fingers over the middle of her chest and extend my claws.

snippets

Happy Sunday, everyone! Welcome back to the blog. I hope you all had an amazing Thanksgiving weekend, and if you are visiting from other countries, I hope the weekend is treating you well.

I’ve decided to share a sexy snippet from my New Adult Pirate/Shifter romance, Call of the Sea with you all today as my Sexy Snippet. If you aren’t familiar, a sexy snippet is 7 sentences from a WIP or published work. In this case, CALL OF THE SEA is a published work, my debut novel, and a story that holds a special place in my heart.  This snippet comes from Ellie and Daniel’s wedding night.

Hope you enjoy 🙂

Candlelight played off the smooth lines of his chest, casting him in a golden glow. He unfastened his breeches, sliding them down his flanks, pulled his feet from the legs, and kicked the pants aside. Straightening, Daniel stood before her in naked splendor.

Her hungry gaze raked over him, appreciating every contour of his magnificent physique.

Mine. My husband.

She reached out to him, beckoning him back to her side.

#Review: Melted Tears: The Outlier Chronicles by Annabelle Blume #Giveaway @inkspellpublish

Welcome back. I know I have been a bit MIA lately, but I have good reason — writing. Can’t fault me there, right?

Anyway, before I get off on a tangent about my absence, let’s get to why I am posting today.

Fellow Inkspell author and friend, Annabelle Blume has a new release out — the newest installment of her Outlier Chronicles series, and I was lucky enough to score a review ARC. Here is what I thought about it. (From Goodreads)

Melted Tears: The Outlier Chronicles
Melted Tears: The Outlier Chronicles by Annabelle Blume
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was really excited to get a chance to read and review this one, as I enjoyed the first story, Frozen Heart so much. In this one, we get to see what happens with Beckett and Cressie (and the dogs) after they decide to abscond from the Affinity together. I don’t do review spoilers, so I will stay away from the plot for the sake of this review. However, I will say that I really loved where the author took this follow-up tale, deciding to pick up on a mention in the first book of Cressie’s parents.

I really think it would make a nice novel, but the novella length matches nicely with the first installment of the tale, and the storyline didn’t feel rushed by the length, so I am content with the way it came off.

The descriptions are stellar and the characters strong and true to what I expected from them based on the first story. Even the dogs are perfectly portrayed and oh so lovable in their protectiveness. This is definitely one to pick up, especially if you read the first story in the series.

Would love to see more stories revolving around the Affinity and the “Collective”. Maybe something that goes more into the reasons for the strict rules and strange breeding laws they have adopted. The society that Cressie and Beckett survive in is one that has me infinitely curious.

A great tale for an evening of reading! I highly recommend this one.

Book #Review: The Watcher by Lisa Voisin #YA #Paranormal #Romance @inkspellpublish

The Watcher
The Watcher by Lisa Voisin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Watcher is a well written YA tale of eternal love, redemption and impossible romances. 17 yr old student, Mia Crawford is your typical HS senior until a trip to the park changes everything. The story features a love triangle, lots of tension, emotion, suspense, a rich history, and strong characterizations. While I think the main theme of the story has been done before, the author gives the tale enough twists and turns to keep the reader from feeling they have seen this all before — just with different characters.

I’m not one for spoilers in reviews, so I wont rehash the story or plot, but I will say I was drawn into the story from the beginning and Ms Voisin did an excellent job of keeping me there until reaching the end. I never felt the story line was predictable or felt I knew what was coming before it did — something that I come across a lot when reading YA stories. That was a nice change for me.

Even the secondary characters felt real and well defined. I would have like to “Like” Michael a bit better, but for me at least, he was a bit annoying in that he was forever sending Mia mixed signals that at some points made me want to reach into the book and throttle him. That being said, he did get me to react emotionally — which I can appreciate because it means despite his flaws, he was a nicely complex character.

I’m giving this 4 stars because of the Michael annoyance factor and because I would have liked to see some of the ancient lore referenced in the tale to be a bit more fleshed out and a bigger part of the overall story.

I would highly recommend this story to any YA romance fans and anyone who enjoys a good Angels and Demons tale. Looking forward to checking out more work by this author.

My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars for this decidedly grown-up sequel.

My Review: After reading and enjoying the first book in this series, WANT, I wasn’t entirely sure how I would feel about a sequel featuring Issac after the events that closed the first novel. As someone who really rooted for Dave when it came to Julianne (yes, I like nice guys), I was concerned I wouldn’t be able to really relate to or sympathize with Issac as a main character.

I need not have worried. Ms. Lawton was able to draw me into Issac’s angst and really feel for him, despite what a cad I thought he had been. By the time he’d run into Heather again, the author had me squarely on his side and feeling badly enough for him to want to root for him to find happiness.

I don’t do spoilers in my reviews, so I will keep the plot points talk to a minimum, but I will say that this book is definitely more maturely written than WANT. There are some interesting “adult” oriented themes here that would appeal to a more mature audience. Saying that, I did feel the shift to an NA genre from the original’s YA stamp was warranted, and made sense for the story when you consider Issac was a great deal older than Julianne in the original story.

I really enjoyed getting another glimpse into Stephanie Lawton’s skewed deep south society. Being born and bred in Upstate New York, I’ve often wondered if life in the south is really that interestingly dysfunctional.

NEED earned 4.5 stars from me. Shy of five, mostly because despite my general “like” of Heather, I never really felt connected to her the way I was to Julianne in the first novel. I am, however, willing to concede that some of that is my own bias — having enjoyed WANT so much.

I would not hesitate to recommend this one, and if you read the first novel, it is a MUST READ.

Getting Closer to FREE READS Time: Gearing Up #Free #CalloftheSea #ShortStory

As some of you may know, the reason for my lackluster posting schedule here on the blog has a lot to do with my alter-ego author, R. Brennan. Having had three releases in December of last year, and her work on another tale to release sometime in May 2013, I haven’t had much time to devote to this side of my personality.

But, finally, the expected release dates for Inkspell Publishing’s Free Reads Week sometime in May, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. While May is still another month away, the change in the weather and the smell of spring in the air has me looking toward the beginnings of summer and all the comes with it — including my free read, FATE’S VOYAGE. I can’t wait to share the continuation of Ellie and Daniel’s story with you all.

Here is just a bit of what I have in store for all of you.

“Captain O’Rourke! You’re needed below right away, sir.” Mac came screeching to a halt before him. “Miss Amelia says yer to come right quick!”

Panic closed Daniel’s throat.

*Ellie!*

Leaving the wheel with the lad, he darted down the quarterdeck stairs and raced across the deck, heart hammering its way up his throat.

Startled crewman scrambled from his path, their shock turning to wide-eyed concern as the frenzied captain disappeared below.

Daniel found Amelia waiting for him outside the door to his cabin, her fingers fretting each other at her waist.

Her tense expression relaxed when she caught sight of him. “Thank heavens.”

His gaze shot to the closed door at her back. “What’s wrong? Is Ellie alright?”

“Yes, but you’ve got to talk to her. She won’t sit still. Since you left at dawn, she’s cleaned the entire cabin floor to rafter, rearranged all her father’s maps and ledgers. Twice. And, now she’s piled all of your clothing to be washed and expects me to have Mac fill the washbasin. You know as well as I she can’t be bending over a washtub in her condition. It’s just too much!” Her hands resumed their nervous activity.

It was all Daniel could do to hide the smile pulling at the corners of his mouth. He placed a calming hand on Amelia’s shoulder. “We both knew how hard it would be for her to make this voyage not being able to do what she’s used to doing. I’m surprised the idleness hasn’t gotten to her before now, frankly. Ellie’s isn’t one to sit still for very long.” He offered a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry. I’ll talk to her. Why don’t you take a break? Go on deck. Get some air.”

“You promise you won’t let her do that wash?”

Daniel knocked his heels together, placed a hand over his heart while the other rose, palm facing her. “You have my solemn vow. She’ll not touch a garment.”

Amelia blew a puff of air through the fringe of curls at her brow, shoulders relaxing. “Scoff if you wish, but you know how she is when she’s riled up. I’ll be in the kitchen if you need me for anything.” She sidestepped him and headed up the companionway, shaking her head and mumbling to herself.

After a moments hesitation to prepare himself for the whirlwind he called wife, Daniel twisted the handle and opened the cabin door.

*wiggles* I can’t wait to have the chance to share the rest.

What about you all? I have to believe some of you have read it. *wink*

What would you like to see in a follow-up story to Call of the Sea? What questions about Ellie and Daniel would you like to see answered? I love comments, so feel free to leave your thoughts.

Until next time. 🙂
